Sam Lavelle always woke up at the last minute. It wasn't like his junior years as an officer. He grew into a relaxed position of being an officer. He no longer attempted to impress every higher grade there was; now he was one of those guys.

His late nights meant late mornings, or at least as late as possible. If the shift began at 0800 he woke up at 0745, brushed his hair and teeth as the replicator made coffee, and put on his uniform. He downed the coffee on the walk to the turbolift and was ready to start his work day before reaching the bridge, albeit with sleep in his eyes and yawning.

Today was no different. He tossed the coffee cup in the disposal and stood waiting for the lift. A few lower grade officers stepped out and he walked in alone.

"Bridge."

The flashing bright white lights seemed to glow in the morning and a yawn later the doors swished open. He wiped his eyes and stretched as he walked down to the Ops Position.

"You're relieved Mister Perkins."

"Ah, Mister Lavelle, glad to have you here. Almost on time."

//\\ Captain Riker had stepped out of his ready room and stood with an expectant look on his face, towering over the young Lieutenant with his arms behind his back. Today was an important day, as he expected them to meet up with the Enterprise in Romulan space. He knew many crew members would be going back and forth, particularly bridge crew who had friends aboard the other ship. So many of them had served under Picard and were now forging their own destinies under his direction.

This young man had potential. Picard, he believed, would be more strict. But he didn't want spoiled moods and tense overcompensation to infect their rendezvous. //\\

"Once you've settled in, let's get some preliminary scans of the area. I want a diagnostic maintained and correlated with the data collected from the Enterprise.

"We should be meeting them within the next few hours. It's going to be a busy morning. Be on point. ...and we're going to have a discussion about your tardiness before the end of the day."

//\\ Riker unfolded his arms and tugged his shirt down, waiting for Lavelle's response. Out of all of he and Deanna's 'kids' serving on the Titan, he felt this was the man to prepare for command someday. But he had to figure out how to iron out the wrinkles. Better to do so while he was young and bad habits might still be broken... //\\

Almost? Tardiness? Riker must be getting senile in his old age. Lavelle was on time. Unless being early is on time. But he was on time. Lavelle yawned again and then shook his head. Not shaking off the sleep but shaking off Riker. He had a deep respect for the captain though. Maybe hew as just joking? After all, when wasn't the captain of a ship on duty?

"You've got it, captain. And...I apologize-" Lavelle popped his right eyebrow up. "I'll have to double check the sync of my clocks."

He feigned a submissive smile before sitting down. He tapped a few controls to double check settings and operations and then carried out Riker's orders quickly and scanned the area for any abnormalities, vessels, or what-have-you.

"Picking up the expected aftermath of a supernova, including fragments of Romulus and Remus. Organic residue as well, captain. There are trace amounts of radiation from the red matter black hole."

Lavelle tapped a few more keys.

"Wait a minute. I'm reading an odd signature. It appears several Romulan War Birds have breached their artificial quantum singularities and appear to be caught in some kind of vortex."

Lavelle ran the scan a third time to see if he'd missed anything.

"Raise our alert status and set a course. Ensign, send word to the Enterprise that we'll be delayed in our meeting. ...first, inform the senior staff that I want them present."

//\\ Riker immediately went into action, taking his place in his chair and bringing up the readings to review on his own. The limited bridge crew responded quickly and efficiently, with all of his short and fast commands executed on the beat. Even his lowest rank crew members had participated in the drills, and he had tuned them into a machine as impressive as the vessel they sailed upon.

He reflected on the Lt's response, and decided to take a moment before the bridge crew arrived to come back to where they'd begun. He left his chair to lean over Lavelle's station, speaking lower so as not to shine a spotlight. //\\

"Mister Lavelle, while I was giving you a hard time earlier, I want you to know something. This bridge...my bridge...is no place for 'yes men'. I don't mean for you to question basic orders or justify every decision, but if you are in the right, don't back down from that. No matter who it is that might oppose you."

//\\ Riker made sure to make eye contact and nodded, then clapped the man on the back without waiting for a response. As he returned to his chair, he straightened his shirt and put focus back on the impromptu mission... //\\

"Let's waste no time in getting there. Lieutenant, given our position and the situation, how would you go about ensuring the safe rescue of all three crews with minimal casualties or damage?"

//\\ He had already planned his course of action, as he'd encountered a similar situation earlier in his career and had the fortune of watching Captain Picard save the day yet again. But he wanted to test Lavelle, to push him in encouraging fashion as was done for him in his youth. Now seated, he awaited both the arrival of his senior officers to the bridge and Lavelle's response to his challenge... //\\

Sam tapped and slid the controls at the ops station, his brow pinched together, and studied the situation before replying.

"I'm showing minimal life signs on all three ships totaling four hundred and five individuals. A single Warbird will hold fifteen-hundred. The hyperonic radiation being released by the quantum singularities will push us too far back for standard transporter beaming."

They were screwed. Sam didn't want to tell Riker that though. If they could get in close enough they'd have to drop shields to transport the Romulans off their ships. And then they risked contaminating the entire crew. It wasn't good enough. Transporting the ruptured singularities off the Romulan vessels also wasn't a viable solution to the situation.

"Theoretically, we could match their speed in the vortex and transport them away in motion. At this rate, the sub-space vortex appears to be feeding off of the breaching quantum singularities."

Sam paused and turned to see Captain Riker.

"I think if we time it just right, when the sub-space vortex opens, matching the velocity of the Romulan ships, we can beam the survivors aboard."

Of course, that could possibly mean attempting a transport at warp speed. And of course that would mean playing it on the fly, calculating the ships' velocity and matching it, and not getting sucked into an unstable sub-space vortex that would collapse at any moment.

Deanna was luckily done with all her appointments for the day and was about to head to her quarters that she shared with her husband when they went into Yellow Alert, which meant that while they might not be in trouble yet there was something going on. So she veered towards the turbolift, knowing before her commbadge went off that Will would want the senior staff to be on the bridge. So she was hardly surprised, and was almost to the lift when it went off. ”Bridge to Counselor Troi.” ”Troi here.” ”The Captain wants the senior staff on the bridge.” She nodded, even though they couldn't see her. ”Already on my way. Troi out.”

It did not take long at all for her to arrive on the bridge, smiling briefly at everyone before she focused partly on her husband and partly on the view screen. ”What's wrong, Captain?” She could tell that he was worried about something. She raised her eyebrow at the tense feelings coming from Lieutenant Lavelle, almost annoyed at something. She turned back to Will, somehow knowing that her skills as a Betazoid would be needed in some form.

//\\ Riker nodded absently as he listened, essentially aiming for the same result. He contemplated the need to create a force wave to push the ships out of the storm if nothing else. Dangerous, but a last resort if need be. The Lieutenant was incredibly accurate in his quick assessment and finding a possible solution.

The turbolift doors opened to reveal Commander Troi arriving on the bridge. As always, he noted the lift in spirits, not just in himself but in others. She was an incredible influence, and beside her he knew...didn't just feel, but knew that he was invincible. //\\

"Make it so, Lieutenant."Picard's words creeping up again as if second nature... "Station us on the side of the storm there, where we have an angle behind their location.

"Commander...Romulans trapped in a vortex of sorts, and readings of the residue from Red Matter. We should be arriving momentarily...

"Let's take shields down immediately in case we need to evacuate those ships, and have a look at how serious this is. We can do a fly-by if necessary. I know it is a risk of contamination, but there are too many lives at stake, and we have the Enterprise nearby to help. We're going to have to take the risk."

//\\ The USS Titan came out of warp into a beautiful yet chaotic and threatening scene. The Warbirds were spread somewhat thin despite their proximity. He racked his brain on how to execute the backup plan if things didn't work out. He took his chair and checked the data coming in. When this was over, he wanted all available information...and the Red Matter was likely responsible for the vortex in the first place.

So much for peace and quiet after the Dominion Wars, the return of Voyager, the major defeat of the Borg at the hands of Kirk and Picard among others. With a sigh, he turned his view back to the main screen. There was something...and again, he saw it.

He couldn't believe he'd fallen for it.

Riker stood abruptly, the realization flashing in his mind. He pointed at the viewscreen and shouted orders in haste... //\\

"Red alert, raise the shields! Mister Lavelle, you see that ship there, and how the others respond...

"Ready phasers, but don't fire unless..."

//\\ It was a trap, and if not for his studies of the limited Romulan military history available, he'd have opened his ship and crew for certain takeover. Or destruction. The pattern gave itself away in how they used each others velocity to appear powerless in a drift. So simple, and yet, when sprung upon the unwary...

Riker had spun to give instructions regarding defensive maneuvers, but his words were cut short by a twinkling hum and a familiar glow around him. The shields weren't activated in time, and he had been caught in a transporter beam. He watched, frozen in a moment of time, as his crew began to respond as if in slow motion. His eyes barely made it to his wife, his hand outstretched, and then...

Gone. //\\

Un-frickin'-believable. Lieutenant Sam Lavelle turned in his seat to see Riker disappear into transport. Slowly Troi was visibly where he once stood. The first officer, Commander Worf wasn't present yet. Nor was Chief Technical Officer Tuvok. Besides Deanna Troi, Lavelle was the most senior officer. Not exactly how he wanted to show his command skills.

Lavelle didn't waste time. He scanned across his station, checking systems and then stood, pointing to the Fill-In-Tactical-Officer.

"Quick! Lock on to the Captain, drop the shields, and beam him back aboard!"

Sir, I can't get a lock! They've raised their shields.

Lavelle slung himself back into the ops position and tapped about. He turned to the helm.

"Do not lose those ships!"

He knew though that if their cloaking devices still worked then it was by far too late. They had little choices at the moment. He needed ideas and he needed them quick. Where were the senior staff? If the Romulan War Birds cloaked Riker would be lost. Not only that, but the Titan would be in a vulnerable position. It quickly popped into mind where Lavelle had read about how Dominion forces had been picking up cloaked vessels and he set out for a long-range tachyon and antiproton beam scanner. Despite the Romulans trap, Lavelle was still picking up ruptures in their artificial quantum singularities.

Doctor Julian Bashir, renown for his medical prowess, was proud to be the new Chief Medical Officer of the USS Titan. He'd been aboard for a month or so now and quite enjoyed the ship. It was different than Deep Space Nine. Now, he stood in the turbolift responding to a hail for senior staff to report to the bridge. Exciting times.

The lift doors swept open and he stepped out with a prepared, albeit brief, boyish smile he was known for, but the sheer panic and tone of the room and the absence of Captain Riker over-rode his charming sentiment.

"What's-what's going on?"

Security officers were rushing to the bridge as well. Deanna Troi was there and the Operations Manager, Lieutenant Lavelle, appeared to be in a concentrated panic. Several Romulan War Birds were on the view screen-nothing abnormal being in Romulan Space. Captain Riker not being on the bridge was bad news. He obviously wasn't hurt or he'd be in medical being treated by yours truly. Red Alert and not on the bridge? Not a good sign at all.

Despite the tense situation that she walked into, she couldn't help but admire how easily Will took command of the ship, something which shouldn't have surprised her since he was the Captain. Plus, she didn't actually need a reason to admire her husband. She settled in her chair on the bridge and tried to use her empathy to see what she could sense about the situation, eyes closing slightly as she concentrated.

Her eyes shot open and she stood as she heard Will say to raise the shields and the alert and a gasp left her mouth as she saw him beam away. She wasn't aware of it but she shouted, ”WILL!” Lieutenant Lavelle started to give orders, even though right now she was senior officer on the bridge, and she allowed him, thankful for the chance to compose herself. It would do Will no good for her to lose it on the bridge.

She thought of something to do, something that really only she could do, should the ships cloak themselves, though it brought up bad memories. ”Lieutenant, if they do raise shields, I may be able to track them.” But until then...”Let the Enterprise know the situation and then try hailing the ships.” She doubted that anyone would object to her giving orders. As of right now, she was the highest ranking officer on the bridge.

She turned her eyes to the turbolift as Dr. Bashir stepped out and asked what was going on. Deanna managed to keep her face and voice calm, squashing the feeling of panic and worry down. ”Captain Riker was apparently beamed aboard one of the Romulan ships.” Her gaze went back to the viewscreen. ”Imzadi, where are you??” She wasn't sure if that was a thought she sent him or not. But she did know that they needed to find him and get him back.

Lavelle turned and nodded at Commander Troi. He pointed to the junior officer on Tactical. Commander Tuvok still hadn't reached the bridge yet, but the young officer knew what to do as far as contacting the Enterprise and hail the Romulan vessel.

"I'll try to lay out some sort of trajectory according to what they may take, Commander. There's no way they'll get far."

No response to the hails, Commander.

This was about the most worse case scenario that could come to mind. It didn't completely make sense however. Whoever was behind this meant that out of everyone on the bridge they knew Riker was in a certain position. Was it plausible that they knew the Titan would respond? Were they out to get Riker specifically??

Lavelle tried to calm his mind.

"Commander, I suggest we lay i n a course following the starboard War Bird."

They were the first to break formation. It was probable that Riker was on that vessel and they were attempting to flee.

Commander Worf had gotten word that Captain Riker wanted all members of the senior staff to make their way to the bridge as soon as possible.

Worf swiftly made his way to the bridge, knowing that something didn't seem quite right. As soon as he arrived at the bridge, he did not take the time to try to evaluate the situation, but noticed something seemed strange.

"I just received word that Captain Riker needed to meet with the senior staff."

Worf said towards Commander Troi. He started to feel a bit uneasy, noticing the facial expressions of others there.

"What's the situation, Counselor?"

Sam Lavelle knew he may be out of line by speaking up and not allowing Commander Troi ample time to gather her thoughts and address Commander Worf; however, Worf was the First Officer and they needed to act fast in order to save the Captain. Troi was too close the situataion at hand and her ability to make a judgment call may be impeded by her attachment to Captain Riker, after all, they were married.

"Commander, the Captain has been kidnapped by one of the three Romulan War Birds. I've set a trajectory to intercept the lead ship break away from the pack. All three ships appear to have a core breach in their artificial quantum singularities. They don't respond to hails, their shields are raised. No information as to whether they can raise cloak or not, but if they do we'll only have a few moments to find the captain, lock on, and beam him off before they cloak."

Lavelle turned to see Worf. Troi and Bashir stood close by.

"With their cores rupturing there must be another vessel close by, sir. I think we should also consider that this is some sort of suicide mission by a sect of Romulan dissidents."

It was well known that there were some Romulans weren't happy with the prospective peace the Federation and Romulus had.

Sam Levalle seemed inclined to take charge over her and Deanna wasn't sure she appreciated that. Of course, she knew that right now she was emotionally compromised with her husband being the one who was kidnapped by Romulans, assuming that it was the Romulans on those ships. But now that Worf was on the bridge, she could instead concentrate on finding Will somehow.

She stared out the viewscreen towards the ships, frowning slightly. She did look up at Worf, knowing he would remember what she was referring to. ”If they put up cloaks, I can find him. I did something similar to find the Remans.” That still caused a shot of pain to surge through her but she quickly forced the feeling down. Going down that path of memories would do her no good, nor would it do finding Will any good.

Could there still be some Remans that wanted to continue what Shizon had tried to start? She desperately hoped that they weren't.

Bashir watched as all the officers rushed to their stations. Many of the junior officers understood their duty but bumped into one another and were in the senior officers ways. He stepped to the side and monitored the science station, checking the Romulan vessels stats. The wild readings of the singularities the Romulans used to drive their ships could possibly be miscalculated inertial dampners. Under normal circumstances they may not even notice, but with the amount of cosmic information in the systems now from the super nova, it was plausible that something was feeding the singularities more than they normally partook.

Bashir wasn't sure if he should speak up or not. Thus far everyone seemed extremely on edge. And, well, he could be wrong. But they were speaking of the life of their captain, and lives he knew well; saving them he knew best.

"I believe if we can some how form a greater inertial dampner around the singularities of the Romulan vessels then these readings would disappear and their cores would stabilize.

It could also buy us the time to get back the captain."

He waited for rejection. The crew had much more space battle experience than he did serving aboard DS9, but, they weren't augmented geniuses either.
